The use of bronopol as a biocide and preservative

Abstract: Bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) was discovered in 1987, but did not find an application for it for a long time until the British Chemical Pharmacy Society systematically studied it as an antimicrobial agent in the late 20th century and early 1960s. Bronopol has an early agricultural application. The first brominated pesticide was developed by Boots, a German company. It is used as a cotton seed treatment agent, no harm to cotton and a variety of crops. Because of its broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, it is used as a disinfectant in the pharmaceutical industry. As the advantages of bronopol continue to be discovered, its application field is also expanding. Due to its broad spectrum antibacterial property, good water solubility, and excellent compound performance, it has been widely used as a preservative in cosmetics such as shampoo, facial cleanser, snow cream and powder in recent years.

1.Cosmetics field

Bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) has inhibitory effect on bacteria, mold and yeast, but has poor inhibitory activity on mold and yeast. Bronopol combined with paraben ester can enhance the inhibitory effect on molds and yeasts. In cosmetics, bronopol as a preservative is mainly used in snow creams, shampoos, baby baths, liquid soaps, baby shampoos, foam baths, lotions, skin creams, protein baths, toners, conditioners, hair dyes, hair lotions and bath gels.

2.Water treatment

Bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) can be combined with isothiazolinone (OIT, DCOIT) and other boicides to form a new type of boicide, which is widely used in cooling water, paper pulp and air conditioning circulating water.

3.Oil reinjection water

Bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) and surfactant are made into strips and blocks of solid bactericides, which can control the growth of microorganisms in oil well water, and can disperse and dissolve in water rather than dissolve in oil, so it can enter the water layer at the bottom of the oil system to kill bacteria, thus effectively inhibiting the corrosion of metal workpieces.

4.Deodorant

The toilet air deodorant using bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) as a biocide can not only kill microorganisms at a very low concentration, but also effectively remove ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan from the toilet air and water. Because bronopol is odorless and inexpensive, the deodorant using bronopol as a biocide can not only be used in household toilets, but also can be used as a deodorant for unpleasant odor in garbage disposal. Deodorant composed of bronopol as biocide and deodorant, metal sulfate or metal chloride as filler, pyrrole compound as anti-corrosion agent, can be used for train, bus, aircraft and ship feces washing deodorant.

5.Other industrial fields

Bronopol(CAS: 52-51-7) has excellent inhibitory effect on pseudomonas, plus good water solubility, so it can be combined with isothiazolinone (OIT, DCOIT) and other biocides to form a new type of biocide, which is widely used in industrial water treatment, paint coating, wood preservative, paper making, leather treatment and so on.
